Not long into my search for northern harriers this short-eared owl appeared out of nowhere. It was like a gift from the universe. Although, northern harriers and short-eared owls often share the same habitat, not an ounce of me anticipated seeing one of these beautiful birds for the first time that day. Short eared owls are a threatened wintering species here in CT. Their decline in numbers is a result of the loss of inland marshes, meadows and coastal wetlands to human development.
